Walking through the lush green foliage of Coolangatta Creek, I was captivated by the discovery of enormous Banksia cones nestled towards the outskirts of the reserve. Their sculptural forms, weathered textures, and quiet resilience stood in striking contrast to the softness of the surrounding vegetation.

This work celebrates these remarkable natural structures. I was in awe of their size and marvelled at this unexpected encounter in such a lush sub tropical environment. The Banksia cones stood as a symbol of endurance with intricate beauty. Through printmaking, I seek to capture not only their physical presence but also my experience of wonder observing, and connecting deeply with the natural world.

This print captures the quiet moment of a fairy penguin as it stands at the entrance of its burrow, poised to return home. Surrounded by native coastal vegetation, the penguin is depicted within its natural habitat, highlighting the delicate relationship between wildlife and the environment that sustains it. I was drawn to the contrast between the penguin’s small stature and the resilience it embodies as it navigates the rugged coastal landscape. The surrounding grasses and foliage create a sense of shelter, emphasising the importance of preserving these fragile ecosystems for future generations.

Through this work, I aim to celebrate the unique habitat occupied by Australian Fairy Penguins and also invite reflection on themes of home, protection, and the interconnectedness of all living things.
